3 Weeks of Work and Play @ The Manor of Art
A couple months ago, my friend Adam got a hold of me and asked if I would help work on an installation with him at this old retirement home that they were planning on turning into artist live/work units. Of course I said YES and we spent several weeks planning the installation and collecting materials from the Rebuilding Center, SCRAP, and random garage sales.
They gave us just a little over 2 weeks to install and set up our rooms. Adam and I were there almost everyday, realizing the concept that we came up with was going to take a lot more man hours then we may have realized. We spent the last week of set up living off of VISO and gas station food in order to put in 14+ hours of work time. Aside from the mass amounts of caffeine i was drinking, there was this energy in the building that just kept making me want to work day and night. All throughout the place was the smell of fresh paint and the sound of power tools and music. Artists would take breaks and walk around to other rooms to say hi and check out everyones progress and the people involved with this project were all so supportive and encouraging. It really was like some Portland DIY Art Camp for two weeks and when the opening of the show finally came around, everyone's room looked amazing. Thank you to everyone who supported and encouraged Adam and I while we lost our minds to build this installation. TOUR: New York, NY: One Hell Of A Town Hosts The Anarchist Book Fair
I finally made it to New York this week, as friends helped me to carry a 40 pound box of paintings and a stenciled TV all over Manhattan and Brooklyn. On Saturday, we arrived at the NYC Anarchist Book Fair to hang some art and see old friends. I also talked with some really incredible collectives and groups who have a shared interest in using art as a means of activism and education.
